Become a Book Buddy!

Book Buddies is for everyone who would like to make a difference in the life of a child being treated for  a life -threatening illness. Books That Heal currently has 60 children who are waiting to write and illustrate a book about their journey with a potentially fatal illness. Their stories are uplifting and full of first-hand experiences as seen through the eyes of these children. They are all special and up-uplifting. There are literally children from all over the country who have requested to write a book.

At Books That Heal we depend entirely on contributions from people in the community....people like you. We currently have no salaried staff or overhead costs. We are simply dedicated to making sure that each child has the best experience possible writing and illustrating their book. When the book is ready to be published, each child is given a book signing party in their hometown - or the town in which they are receiving treatment.

Every book is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece simply, because of the child behind the writing and illustrating. Our founder, Michael Flatley, travels all across the country at his own expense from his home in New York to personally meet every child who writes a book. To date, that includes, Florida, North Carolina, Texas, all along the Eastern Seaboard and even into Canada.

That's why we are asking you to join the Book Buddy family. We do not want any of the children on our waiting list to be unable to tell their story, and for a gift of $25, 250.  $500- or any amount that is comfortable for you - can help make sure all of them realize their dream of  becoming published authors.

Every Book Buddy will receive a child's story along with updates every few months. You will come to know their families and be touched by the medical professionals who provide their treatment and who are continually looking for a cure for some of the most egregious conditions. Conditions like DIPG. Diffsue Intrinsic Pontine Glioma primarily affects children, with most diagnoses occurring between 5 and 7 years of age. It makes up 10-15% of all brain tumors in children, with about 150-300 new diagnoses per year in the United States.  No chemotherapy drugs to date are known to have an impact on survival. Unfortunately, fewer than 10% of the children with DIPG survive two years from diagnosis.

Emma Marques wrote a book titled  "Emma the Brave." Emma was born in 2009 and a DIPG tumor took her life shortly after her sixth birthday. Her doctors called her a “Warrior Princess” because she was so brave during her extensive treatment regimen. Emma went through radiation treatments, sometimes close to two hours long, without needing any anesthesia. Emma truly was as brave as brave can be, and she wanted to tell her story and be an inspiration to children who are facing some of the things she had already experienced.

Here's how becoming a Book Buddy can impact the life of a child like Emma:
  • A gift of $250 could pay the cost to print a book for one child.
  • A gift of $100 could help underwrite the cost of graphic design to prepare a child's book for publication.
  • A gift of $50 could pay the binding cost for two books.
Every Book Buddy who gives will receive a personal thank you from a child's mother. You will also receive our newsletter with information about other children and how we are putting your gift to work immediately.
Every child has a story and every story is unique. Each is special and up-lifting. By joining the Book Buddies family, you too become a part of their story. Please don't hesitate to become a Book Buddy today.
We appreciate your support and promise to put your generous gift to work instantly.

With gratitude,
